"The square root of 144 is 12!"
―Derrick's first lines in the series

Derrick McReary is the fourth born child and youngest brother of the five McReary siblings, and appears as a primary cast member in Sibling Rivalries.

Description[]

Derrick began as a caricature of a standard "nerd", being obsessed with learning like Gerry is with football. He is smart with facts, which he loves to exclaim randomly. As the series went on, it became apparent that Derrick simply loves to learn, and encourages others to do so. He is not "obsessed" with math like he once was, but he would certainly prefer to spend his free time studying to brush up on his knowledge. At times, he can demonstrate extremely high intelligence for his age, even for a college level.

"Pack To The Future" reveals that, at the age of 12, he got into high school two years earlier. He also mentions in "Trading Places" that the content taught to him in third grade is "way below his standards". It is unknown what year Derrick will skip two grades, and why he hasn't done so sooner if third grade is easy. Perhaps for now, he is comfortable where he is at, and prefers to venture into new territory on his own rather than being required to.

While being an optimist like the rest of his family, Derrick can sometimes be rude and insult his fellow siblings in comics such as "Yearning to be Young" (in a future scene he tells 31 year-old Packie to "grow up" and start acting like a kid, though maybe he had a point here) or "The McRearys' Halloween Special!" (criticizing Francis' Halloween costume for not at all looking like a hockey player), or even upset when things do not go his way such as in "Torres and Tribulations" when he realized that his character was not written in Packie and Francis' play; despite being told he can be in the next one, he still tries to get into the current play.

He was occasionally presented as the sibling that would get easily worried when the family is doing wrong (such as in "Haunted House of Horror" and "Attack of the BeastDroid"). Nowadays, he would not be as worried, and would simply analyze the situation to take the best path out of it. Nowadays, Zachary Marshall is presented as the sibling to have an immediate "flight" response.

The comic "My Ma Said Knock You Out" reveals he is a pacifist, not wanting himself or others to engage in violent actions. He tells Packie that, despite Joel insulting him, Packie should have retaliated with words rather than his fists. However, when it comes to people like Bruce Warren, the pedophile in "Black Bear", Derrick probably understood he was far beyond redeemable and thus joined in on the family giving him "one slap each" for his actions towards Kate.

Future Life[]

In "Rock n' Roll, Bro!", he mentions his dream job as being a mathematics teacher for either high school or university. This has yet to be seen, although GTA Nerd has an idea regarding how events may not pan out for Derrick as expected; perhaps in high school, when pushing himself too hard, he feels like his brain "explodes" and he cannot keep up with his courses anymore. He may not remain the genius that he pushed himself to be, and may have to settle for a less mentally exhausting job.

Trivia[]

  • He wears braces.
  • His IQ is 113 as he tells Kate (whose is apparently 73) in "Journey to the Bottom of the Pool".
  • Derrick and Francis are the only siblings to always be referred to by their full names, as Packie, Gerry, and even Zack are shorter forms of their full names Patrick, Gerald, and Zachary.
    • In "The McRearys Get Schooled!", Gerry uses a nickname "Rick" for him, but Derrick asked him to not use that name again. Similarily, Francis's original nickname was meant to be "Frankie" in "Hello, Wisconsin!", and expressed a disliking when Packie called him that in "Maureen Be Not Proud". two comics hint that Kate's full name is "Katelyn" but GTA Nerd hasn't confirmed this to be true.
  • As revealed in "My Ma Said Knock You Out", he carries a magnifying glass with him everywhere he goes.
  • In "Making Quite The Buzz", Derrick reveals that he is allergic to cats.
  • Derrick is one of a few known male characters that are insecure about being seen without a shirt, especially when swimming, with others including Zachary Marshall, Jose Gonzales, and Anthony DeoBer.
  • Derrick is the only family member to have never been depicted with a romantic partner; in fact, in "Love is What Makes the World Go 'Round" he outright states that he has no interest in dating, when even younger sister Kate has a boyfriend. It is unknown if this will change in his adulthood, but for now, it can be assumed that Derrick identifies as aromantic.
