Niko Bellic in GTA IV

"After you walk into a village and you see 50 children, all sitting neatly in a row, against a church wall, each with their throats cut and their hands chopped off, you realize that the creature that could do this doesn't have a soul."
―Niko Bellic

Niko Bellic is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto IV, as well as a supporting character in The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Description[]

Niko, of Serbian heritage, is a former soldier who fought from 1992 to 1998. During that time, his war unit was betrayed by somebody, which he thought was either Florian Cravic or Darko Brevic

In 2008, Niko is urged by his cousin Roman Bellic to join him in Liberty City for a happy life full of mansions, women, and cars. Niko accepts, while also looking forward to moving to LC as he believes Florian or Darko would be there. Upon arriving to Roman's apartment, Niko realizes that Roman had lied about his fortunes and was still a cab driver with plenty of debts.

Niko helps Roman with his business while also fighting off loan sharks. One particular person that Niko worked for to pay off Roman's debts, Vladimir Glebov, often slept with Roman's girlfriend Mallorie Bardas. Killing Vlad leads to the rest of the games events, from Niko having to work for Vlad's employees Mikhail Faustin and Dimitri Rascalov, to Dimitri stabbing Niko in the back and having Niko and Roman escape to a different part of town. Niko continues working with other low-lifes of the city; different from other traditional Grand Theft Auto protagonists, Niko remains a hired gun rather than somebody who builds or protects his own empire.

Niko successfully finds the man to betray his war unit. It was not Florian (known now as Bernie), but instead Darko who killed his buddies for a measly $1000, which he might have spent on drugs. The player can decide whether Niko kills Darko or spares him so he can continue suffering a life of drug-filled agony. Niko seems a bit happier if he spares Darko, while killing him leaves him feeling empty.

By the end of the game, a boss of a lower-tier crime family, Jimmy Pegorino, wants Niko to work with Dimitri to sell some heroin. The player can choose whether Niko works with his own nemesis (and unfortunately get screwed over again), or follow through with a tip-off from Roman to hunt down Dimitri and finally kill him. Regardless of whether the player takes the Deal or Revenge, Niko loses somebody close to him at the end of the game.

If the Deal ending is taken, Jimmy happily parts ways with Niko, while Niko chooses to not go after Dimitri. Niko attends Roman and Mallorie's wedding, when an assassin appears ready to kill Niko. Niko saves himself and kills the man, but unfortunately Roman is killed. Niko decides to take revenge against Dimitri with Little Jacob, a close friend of his and Roman's.

If Niko takes Revenge against Dimitri, Jimmy is furious. Niko attends Roman and Mallorie's wedding - this time with his girlfriend Kate McReary - but it is interrupted by Jimmy who commits a drive-by with the intention to kill Niko. Niko and other wedding guests survive, but sadly Kate is the one caught in the crossfires. Niko and Little Jacob seek revenge against Jimmy, with Roman also tagging along despite his fears of the car chases and gunfights.

Life after GTA IV[]

Niko's life by 2013 is unknown. Judging by dialogue from Lester Crest in Grand Theft Auto V, Niko has "gone quiet". Patrick "Packie" McReary is a friend of Niko that he makes in the storyline who also moves to Los Santos, the setting of GTA V, by 2013. If Packie is selected to join the protagonists on one of their heists, he recounts the events of his own heist that Niko joined him in. Packie mentions that Niko is "probably dead".

Niko's fate remains up to player's interpretations. He could have been hunted down by those still seeking revenge against him, or he managed to lay low

Appearances in the GTA Nerd Comic Universe[]

Niko Bellic has made a cameo in the Sibling Rivalries comic "Locker 239". Marco Johnson plays GTA IV at school via a PlayStation 3 console installed in the titular locker. Here, Niko was only seen from the back with the phone in the corner indicating that he is talking to Roman. The hat that he wears appears to be the one that can be purchased from the Russian Shop.
